I am often invited to parties and events. Most of the time, I am focused on the party food when I am out. It's the appearance, the smell, the colors - everything - that draw my attention. Since I started this blog and kept going out and about in NYC, I keep a food diary, detailing the canapés I taste, the hors d'œuvres I see, the snack food I like and the dessert bar I resort for my sugar cravings. And I am thorough and strict. I avoid personal comments, just present the food offered and occasionally the layout. During the last two years, I was invited to hundreds of parties, attended a few and completed more than enough pages of party food notes.
It seemed that I had nothing else to add. I thought that I knew everything.
Until yesterday where in a cosy event promoting Italian photography and art, there was a snack food I have never seen or eaten.
The Deep Fried Olives. Courtesy of Hudson Yards Catering, there were fatty but tasty, small but unique. How far a chef's brain has gone to come up with such an innovation? Most people I know love olives. But deep fried olives, I didn't know their existence.
The Deep Fried Olives will definitely make an entry in my party food diary. And, as I predict, also in my kitchen.

I don't know much about furniture design therefore I won't make any comments regarding the well-known and hugely publicized event in New York. But I will comment briefly on the food and drink trends as witnessed the last couple of days:
1. Recession is definitely here as there was not much food. With the exception of very few stores that provided cooked and snack food, most of them offered just chips, nuts, pretzels, pop-corn, candy and cookies if you were lucky
2. The drink of the day was by large majority vodka with tonic. Served with a leave of mint and slice of cucumber or just with a slice of lime
3. The candy buffet is becoming a dessert trend (see picture). I saw it in Soho on Saturday (and in a number of events in the Big Apple the previous weeks). The table had to offer a selection of licorice, wine gums, chewing gum, M&Ss, lolly pops...There was also a cotton candy machine making fresh pink cotton candy that everybody loved
Do we all miss our childhood days? Just wondering....

European Wine Council's annual gala dinner took place at the well-known Cirque restaurant last Thursday, celebrating fine wine and outstanding cuisine. Participants, who included wine importers and experts, members of the press, restaurateurs, chefs and retailers specializing in food and wine, tasted crab cakes with béarnaise sauce, shrimp tempura with spicy mayonnaise and duck brochette ala orange canapés (amongst others) while sipping Champagne Gosset Brut and Mont-Ferrant Brut Rosé. The sit-down dinner was equally impressive: the wines were paired with the menu specially prepared under the personal direction of owner Sirio Maccioni.
The list included Jean-Luc Colombo, "Amour de Dieu", 2005 maching the egidiana ravioli, Marchesi Antinori Tenuta Guado al Tasso Il Bruciato 2007 with the saddle of lamb and Ayios Onoufrios 2006 with the selection of the three cheeses. The dessert, the amazing Millefoglie was accompanied by the Centurion Commandari 30 years old and "Lo Clavell" Muscat de Rivesaltes, 2005.
The Gala honored founder of Bottlerocket Wine & Spirits, Tom Geniesse, and the vice president of European Imports and Sales at Total Wine & More, Alfio Moriconi. The Ambassador's awards were presented by Dr. Lucio Caputo, the chairman of the European Wine Council.
The elegant reception, the fantastic dinner, the impeccable service and the warm atmosphere made this gala dinner an event to remember.
I am looking forward to next year's already.
